Reviews of Snowbird are almost invariably dripping with superlatives. They applaud its fluffy dry powder, steep terrain and the huge ski area the resort encompasses when combined with interconnected Alta. And to an extent they're right to gush. Snowbird is the ideal resort for a certain section of resort attendes - advanced and experienced skiers and boarders.
The variety of skiing terrain and snow quality are outstanding. But this isn't a resort for everyone. At Snowbird, the skiing and snowboarding take precedence over ancillary resort activities like nightlife, shopping and fine dining. And the base village sure is ugly. While more extensive than neighbouring Alta, it is infinitely less charming. In design parlance, the uniting theme could be described as soviet era nuclear bunker meets parking lot chic. Although for serious riders chasing outstanding snow and challenging terrain, this eyesore is quickly forgotten once you set foot inside Snowbirds famous tram towards its snowy goods.
